The name for this method of bodywork originated with Dr. Ida Rolf, a Biochemist, who began to develop a system for removing myofascial restrictions from the body in the 1940's. The results were so positive and dramatic, that she continued to research her discoveries and, over the years, developed the principles of her therapy she called Structural Integration, later trade marked Rolfing®, and founded her school, The Rolf Institute, in Boulder, Colorado.
